How to Recover Deleted Texts on iPhone
RecoverWhen using the iPhone’s Messages app to exchange images, videos, voice memos, GIFs, and other types of media, it may rapidly fill up a lot of storage space, especially if you’re like most people and decide not to erase your texts after a certain amount of time. Here are some methods how to Recover Deleted Texts on iPhone
It’s a good idea to sometimes delete outdated messages and attachments to help manage your local storage and iCloud backups.
We’ve all been there, so don’t panic. Fortunately, there are a few ways to retrieve deleted texts from your iPhone, including utilizing iCloud, iTunes, or a third-party tool.
Here, we’ll walk you through each technique in an effort to recover your important iPhone texts.
How to restore deleted texts using iCloud:
Any texts that were on your iPhone at the time of the backup should be recoverable if you’ve ever backed up your device to iCloud.
However, there is a catch: in 2018, Apple updated the rules and added specific Messages capability to iCloud. Activating this in your iPhone’s Settings menu syncs messages between all of your devices that share the same Apple ID. Incredibly useful if you have numerous iOS devices.

The drawback of this, though, is that when the capability is activated, deleted messages are removed from all linked devices and aren’t included in regular iCloud backups.
The only method to restore texts from an iCloud backup is to totally delete your iPhone and restore it from the backup if you’re fortunate enough to not have the capability activated. Just be sure to restore from a backup made before the lost text messages!
Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Backups to see which backups you have available.
How to retrieve deleted texts using iTunes/Finder:
There are two other alternatives to attempt if you have iCloud Messages activated. You can first try to restore lost text messages using an iTunes backup (or the Finder in macOS Catalina or later). The ideal approach is frequently this.
Your iPhone should automatically be synchronized with your PC or Mac unless you’ve turned off automatic sync in iTunes.
- Connect your iPhone to the PC or Mac you sync with.
- If iTunes (or the Finder in macOS Catalina and later) doesn’t open automatically, do it yourself.
- You should see your iPhone appear in the top-left. Click it.
- In the General tab, click ‘Restore’.
- The information on your phone will now be replaced with anything you previously backed up.
- It will require some time. Those texts should come back to your phone if you haven’t backed them up after removing them.

How to get deleted texts back using a third-party app:
- It’s time to use nuclear weapons if nothing of the aforementioned methods has worked.
- Although it won’t technically cost you any money, there is no assurance that it will work.
- Although we haven’t personally tried them, the third-party applications PhoneRescue by iMobie and Enigma Recovery.
- WonderShare Dr.Fone for iOS, iMyFone D-Back Data Recovery, and Tenorshare iPhone Data Recovery all seem to have positive web reviews.
- Because messages are stored on your iPhone in compressed form even after you have “deleted” them, these applications don’t require a backup.
- That means there is no assurance that by using these applications (or others), you will be able to retrieve deleted communications.
The greatest piece of advice we can provide anyone considering this procedure is to do it right away after deleting the text messages; the longer you wait, the more probable it is that the data will be overwritten and lost forever.
